State observes Intl Day of Disabilities, Divyangjans moving ahead despite challenges in life: ICA Minister
Tripura along with other parts of the country Saturday observed the International Day of Persons with Disabilities to highlight issues that affect people with disabilities and to champion.
While, addressing the main programme held at Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan in Agartala on Saturday, Information and Cultural Affairs (ICA) Minister Sushanta Chowdhury said that every people of the society has to contribute their best to make a beautiful society and amidst adverse situations, the ‘Divyangjan’ are moving forward.
He said that there are lots of lessons people have to learn from Divyangjan, because they are some specialty which does not have common people and they can also contribute to the development of society.
He said that the adoption of December 3 as the International Day of Persons with Disabilities happened during the UNGA’s 37th plenary meeting, on October 4, 1992 and since then, the day has been observed to encourage increased assimilation of persons with disabilities in the socio-political, economic and cultural aspects of life.
“The world is for all and all are dependable on each other and for luck some people are born in the world as Divyangjan, but they are an important part of the society and they can contribute for upliftment of society,” said Chowdhury. Some are born as Divyangjans but they are an inseparable part of the society. The Divyangjans also play a significant role in building a healthy society. The government stands by them and always will, said Chowdhury.
Highlighting the efforts of the government for welfare of Divyangjan, Chowdhury said that starting from primary education to higher education and after education, there are job opportunities, with the government working in all sectors for socio-economic development of this section of society.
Appreciating the rule of the Social Welfare and Social Education department for upbringing of Divyangjan, Chowdhury said that due to tireless efforts of the department, the Divyangjan of the state are getting all faculties for their peace and beautiful life.
The Sbhadipati of West Tripura Zilla Parishad, Antara Deb in her speech in the programme also highlighted government schemes for Divyangjan including distribution of aids, scholarship and job opportunities for them.
During the programme, state commissioner of Persons with Disability, Mohammad Jubair Ali Hasmi and West District programme officer of SE and SW department also delivered their speeches. At the concluding part of the programme, aids like wheelchairs, hearing aids were distributed among the beneficiaries.
Trimon Sarkar, a young lady residing in women’s home in Abhoynagar was felicitated for securing job as a teacher after passing in TET examination. Trimon Sarkar shared her life experiences in her speech. She also thanked the state government and SW&SE department for providing assistance in education and in other areas. Children of different schools, home and NGO organizations run under SW&SE department joined the programme.
